If you are the owner of a relatively new Lg refrigerator with an inverter (linear) compressor, you will very soon encounter a problem when the freezer does not work, the fan simply blows cold air. The refrigeration section works almost normally. You remove the rear cover of the engine compartment and clean the dust that has accumulated there. The refrigerator seems to come to life and begins to freeze. But not for long.

What is a linear inverter refrigerator compressor from Lg (Lg), how does it differ from a regular one, and why, looking ahead, we can state that it turned out, modestly speaking, to be an unconvincing product?

These compressors appeared in mass production about 12 years ago, but then consumers practically did not know about them. They were produced in a limited batch.

In principle, the compressor really has many advantages; Lg engineers definitely tried hard on this front). There is low energy consumption, low (albeit quite peculiar noise level), a bunch of various protections and operating algorithms depending on the refrigerator load, room temperature and many other parameters.

In addition, there is smart diagnostics by phone, essentially a built-in analog modem that transmits data about problems to the service manager.

"Linear" compressor:

The piston is driven by an alternating magnetic field => No friction losses. Smooth start and stop. Electronics control.

Standard piston compressor:

The rotational movement of the compressor shaft turns into the translational movement of the piston => Friction losses.

In theory, everything looks beautiful and convincing. Smart control, low energy consumption, high efficiency and manufacturability. But this is a theory. In real life, unfortunately, hidden mistakes and shortcomings begin to emerge.

What is the reason?

The main disease of this type of compressor is the loss of compression by the piston due to overheating and poor quality of the piston plastic. There is also insufficient oil in the compressor crankcase. The design of the engine compartment does not promote good cooling, often becoming clogged with dust and causing overheating. This is further aggravated by the lack of an alarm for the temperature in the chambers - a clear miscalculation by the manufacturer. Consequently, observing the usual numbers on the display, the user does not raise the alarm until the refrigerator completely melts.

Of course, new models of Lg refrigerators have a condenser-cooler placed on the rear wall (as in conventional refrigerators), in an effort to improve the cooling of the unit, new electronics firmware, but reality shows that compressors continue to break down. Sometimes an interturn short circuit occurs in them, which leads to the failure of an expensive control module, despite the “smart” inverter and a bunch of overload protections.
